the perils of a single girl: part IV

him or the idea of him.

did some soul searching this morning on my drive back to SA and that is the thought that has plagued my mind. i think it's something that most females struggle with, but it strikes forcibly and ever-so-inconspicuously with yours truly. i have a winsomely quixotic personality to begin with, then you add that to the fact that i've been reading (on average) two books a week since i was the tender age of four years old and you've got yourself one hell of a daydreamer living in her own little microcosm with no grounding sense of reality. it's only very recently that i've admitted this about and to myself, so i figure if i write it on the blog, it is there for others to see and my secret is out of the bag.

this wreaks havoc on the love life because you can be so convinced that someone is so unbelievably right for you based upon your notion of who he is, yet there is very little substantial evidence to back up that claim. you see so much potential that it's maddening and as you play out the movie of what your life is going to look like, you see that person there. with you. you don't understand why it can't work, because in your head and in your heart, it's always worked and as they say in the fairy tales, love conquers all.

what nobody ever bothered to tell me (or maybe i wasn't listening) is that life isn't a fairy tale.

please, please whatever you do, don't misinterpret this as though i'm washed up, bitter, and jaded (because i'm not), i've just been handed a big huge reality check and i'm trying to be (shocker!) a mature adult about it. what i've realized on my little sojourn home is that often times, your perception of who someone is can be heavily influenced by who you want them to be. and unfortunately YOU ARE NOT IN LOVE WITH WHAT IS, BUT WHAT COULD BE. undoubtedly, you'll miss that person and the role they play in your life, but i think the true heartbreak comes from having to mourn the dream.

the real danger arises when you think that somehow, someway you can change or alter the situation. my granddad used to always say, "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." i don't think i really knew what he was talking about at the time, but it's a simple concept and one that i'm still grasping: YOU CAN'T CHANGE ANYONE. try as you might, love as hard as you can, but at the end of the day, it's about acceptance. true love requires giving that person true acceptance and freedom.

additionally, it's about acceptance of who you are as well. for me personally, i have to accept that i'm a small town, old fashioned girl from the bible belt who believes a little too heavily in the relationship standards of yesteryear. i can wish upside down, backwards and sideways that those weren't my convictions (i've tried), but that is who i am. why on God's green earth would you try so vehemently to change so that you can fit someone else's perfect mold? just so you know, i'm asking myself the question.

i've written a lot of goofy, spitfire, comical posts about dating dirtbags or my celebrity crushes and labeled it under the category of "love" on this blog, but that is an acknowledged mistake on my part. NONE of that is love. to paraphrase, love is patient and love is kind. it doesn't envy and it doesn't boast. it's not proud nor rude and it definitely doesn't glorify the self. it does not rise up in anger and it keeps no list of wrongs. love does not delight in evil, but it prevails when the truth is spoken. IT ALWAYS PROTECTS, ALWAYS TRUSTS, ALWAYS HOPES, AND ALWAYS PERSEVERES. if you're calling something love and it doesn't go like that, then honey, it ain't love.

i'm being really stubborn about it, but i really think that God is trying to teach me a thing or two about being content whatever my circumstances. i also think He's showing me that there really are no coincidences and the people that He places in your life are there for a reason even if i don't know that reason right now. to the individual who inspired this post, i think you're an amazing man and i wouldn't take anything back because knowing you has made me a better person.

end of tx rodeo season...

sad day, my friends. rodeo austin (star of texas rodeo) finals went down on saturday night, so the major texas rodeo circuit has drawn to an end, but i can't say we didn't have a good run! ft. worth, san antone, houston, and austin were all a blast. i met so many great people along the way and i am so proud to be associated with this great sport. i'll leave you with a few scenes from austin and a video that says it all: LONG LIVE COWBOYS!

small arenas are the best!

getting harassed by the rodeo clown. you can tell by the look on my face that i am not amused!!!

the perils of a single girl: part III

the toolbox revisited

yeah that’s right, it’s time to go back out to the shed and investigate this ever-evolving, ever-present breed. at this point, you might be thinking, “this girl sure does write about gigolo gym rats and alpha squared males a lot…maybe she secretly harbors an inner adulation for them!” WRONG. quiet self confidence and humility = INCREDIBLY attractive. thinking you’re God’s gift to women = INCREDULOUS look of disgust.

i am reopening this can of worms because this past weekend, i had some encounters that have upped the ante so to speak.

it all started this last saturday night when i attended a birthday party for one of my friends at a local restaurant. we had an excellent time, but apparently i was totally out of the loop because i wasn’t aware that “the adonis” was in our presence. it appears that not only was i supposed to know that one of the birthday guests was a gold medal winner at the vancouver olympics (i won’t give away which sport – it rhymes with mob-fled), but i was also supposed to be mind-blowingly, astonishingly impressed enough to be a groupie. under ordinary circumstances, i would be imminently impressed with this feat, but when one has to be so in-your-face about it, i’m sorry, i’m just not.

the girls at the other end of the table and i started discussing this matter and told one ridiculous, highly-entertaining story after the next about egomaniacs. i hope my friend doesn’t mind me sharing this story, but I thought it was pretty darn amusing. don’t have permission to use her name yet, so we’ll call her T. T (a beautiful, outgoing, fun-loving girl) went out on a date with a presumably respectable guy. as they sat down to dinner, the guy had the cojones to tell her, “look darlin’, before you and i get anything started here, i need to know that you’re going to be comfortable with my celebrity. being the game warden in this county, well it’s a lot of hard work, and well, people know me around here. at any point in time at this restaurant, someone could come up and say hi. i really have a reputation around here, are you going to be comfortable dating a public figure?” HAHAHAHAHA. laughing my head off at this point in the story…poor, sweet T.

as for an update on the bradley favre spawn, well, i’ve nipped it in the bud…i’d rather just have a bottle of his cologne. hey, i tried to be open-minded about things….oh you’re 30 and you have a beirut table on your front porch? how vintage, and what a sociable guy! oh you failed out of junior college? college isn’t for everyone you know, i just love that entrepreneurial spirit! oh you’re going to be in vegas, lake tahoe, los angeles, and miami beach over the next four weekends? how nice to have such a flexible job working in the family business AND you love traveling – ME TOO!

funny how we have this way of twisting things to mean what we want them to mean.

unfortunately, there’s not a pretty, half-hearted justification one can make when one of mr. fancy pantz’s lifelong friends adamantly warns, “look, all i’m saying is that if i had daughters, there’s no way i’d let him touch them with a ten foot pole.”

enough said. oh yeah, mr. fancy pantz, i lied about loving your new custom made boots…they were a tad bit too liberace for me.

kimberly kelly :) great girl, new cd!

local waco girl kimberly kelly has a brand new album out "sweet time dancin'" and it is sure good! you should buy it on itunes! beside the fact that kim is super talented and beautiful, she's EXTREMELY nice too. this girl and i have a lot in common - a mutual love of georges (george strait & george's bar), texas music, and we were both devastated when dierks bentley got hitched. check out the lyrics to this track "ode to dierks" on the new album (my thoughts exactly):

mamma came home, she took my hand
she said, baby girl this might hurt you, but i'll help you understand
the front page news wanted to tell you first
some sweet thing stole him, your old boy dierks

i'd seen him out, doin his thing
and i had no reason to think he was out buyin rings
i thought he was a drifter, with plenty of time to spare
but now i hear that he's exchangin vows and i'm not there

he got married without me, he left our love behind
he didn't wait for an answer for me to say yes or deny
we coulda made magic and i'd have loved him like no other
but now i'm left to watch him love on another

if he asked me how i'm doing, i'd lie and say great
but i'd even picked out dog bowls especially made for jake
free and easy down the road he goes
nothing bout it easy for me, long trip alone

we coulda made magic, the next tim and faith
i knew he needed distance, i sure didn't think...

gettin' married without me, leave our love behind
he didn't wait for an answer for me to say yes or deny
we coulda made magic and i'd have loved him like no other
but now i'm left to watch him love on another

i didn't want to wear white tank tops for the rest of my life anyways!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA BRILLIANT SONG KIMBERLY! :)

hilarious!

do you know what it means to miss new orleans?

y'all know i'm a texas girl through and through, but i just got back from spending six glorious days in NOLA and i already miss it very dearly. there is something so completely wonderful about the crescent city and i shall never adequately be able to express my adoration for it in words. i just think it's a fantastic place to get away and i think i will keep going there time after time for the rest of my life. besides, i'm much too addicted to crab cakes and those beignets to stay away for long!!!! i want to say a special thank you to brit for letting us stay at the "turquoise casa" and to my darlings cori jo, heather, and jessica for making it such a fun trip! a few things i love about nawlins...

I) JACKSON SQUARE & ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL - not many folks know that this is the oldest cathedral in the USA and i think it's just stunning. during the day it's nice to catch a glimpse of a traditional new orleans wedding party doing the grand march with parasols in hand and at night, it's quite eerie (yet super cool) to wander around all of the eccentric palm readers and ghost hunters. however, my favorite thing to do at jackson square is to catch a carriage ride - it's an absolute must!

II) RANDOM TRIVIA - did you know that william faulkner had a house on pirate's alley? have you seen the house where tennessee williams wrote "a streetcar named desire?" did you know that lenny kravitz, sandra bullock, and nicholas cage all have properties in N.O.? i bet you didn't know that the oldest bar in america is called blacksmith's and it's on bourbon!

III) WHO DAT NATION - who dat? who dat? who dat sey dey gonna beat dem saints? i gotta say, spend a few days in this city and you'll be converted into a saints fan. they just have so much pride for their team and there is such a sense of accomplishment coursing through the veins of the city. not to mention, drew brees is pretty much worshipped around those parts. i hear from good sources that he's actually an incredible guy and very involved in the community (p.s. hot wife!.) i like sean payton too!

IV) CAJUN COOKIN' - oh my lawdy, i could eat cajun food ALLLLLLL day long every day!!! i think it is the best. i don't care if it's gumbo, po'boys, crawfish, etouffee, bread pudding, CRAB CAKES, grits, crepes, shrimp or alligator - I LOVE IT ALL! why am i so highly enthusiastic about the food? you just have to go there for yourself and see, i promise you won't be sorry...like we're talking if i had to pick my last meal on death row, send me something from NOLA. i HIGHLY recommend brennan's, court of two sisters, crepes a la cart (cute little stand on the tulane campus), zea's, commander's palace, and galatoire's. if you really want your bang for your buck, go to brunch at court of two sister's like my friends and i did...you can have as much as you want for only $30! oh yeah, don't forget to wash everything down with a hurricane or a john daly ;)

V) SHOPPING ON MAGAZINE STREET - if you're looking for strip or outlet malls, this might not be your thing...however, if you're looking for the places where the sophisticated socialites of the deep south spend their husbands' hard earned dollars, this would be the place for you. all along this quaint, tree-lined street, there are boutiques filled to the brim with the finest dresses and heels you ever saw! someday, i'd like to prance around magazine street in my tweed suit, big hat, sunglasses and gloves and pretend for just one day that i am southern royalty...

more than anything, i'd say there is a spirit to this city that i just love. i guess the people get it from their creole roots, but there is just an undeniable spark to the people and things that inhabit new orleans. just like in their fine cooking, there is an extra spice and downhome comfort that is discernible in everything here. COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS TILL I RETURN!

why would ANYONE cheat on these women?!?!

in light of the breaking news that jesse james is now in the doghouse for carrying on an extramarital affair with a tatted up hooker, i have decided to investigate this mysterious phenomenon of ordinary men cheating on extraordinary, unbelievable women. i have chosen sandra, halle, and shania as examples of high profile scandals, but i know there are many others.

i just don't get it. how can you cheat on a woman who is obviously smart, undeniably classy, filthy rich, insanely talented, and off-the-charts gorgeous? i mean, really, how is it ever going to get better than halle berry?!?! that poor man who went behind her back because of an alleged "sex addiction" is in for a lifetime of continual disappointment.

a question i ponder: is it really worth it to a man to leave behind a home - an entity that has been both painstakingly and joyously built by one memory after the next - to get his kicks from a two bit cocktail waitress or an aspiring "model/actress/reality tv contestant?" i'm still baffled.

one thing is for sure, being an incredible woman who seems to have it all together does not make you immune from infidelity. i've said it once and i'll say it a thousand more times: billy currington was right...God is great. beer is good. and people are CRAZY!!!!!!!!

p.s. i'm genuinely bummed about the demise of sandra & jesse. i thought they were the real deal. i found myself telling someone just last week that i wanted a love like theirs. hmmm...guess not.

is aaron watson a cutie or what?

gypsyville is the best place on earth.

thought i'd take a few moments to tell you about my favorite company in the world. if you haven't heard about junk gypsy than you are truly, truly missing out i tell you! i have referenced the store and the sikes girls on my blog numerous times, but i just thought i'd give them another mention because they are AMAZING!

the sikes sisters (amie & jolie) started the company along with their mother (janie) over ten years ago with the simple dream of collecting junk (or precious treasures) and peddling it all over the south. these business savvy texas ladies have turned their little antique business into an empire and have stayed true to themselves every step of the way.

the junk gypsy philosophy: "we believe in loving what you do and doing what you love…in learning something from every pitstop and every path along the way. we believe in the beautiful, wild human spirit and that it only grows richer and stronger day after day, year after year. we believe in big love and big dreams. we believe in family. and above all of this, we believe in BELIEVING."

ain't that just the best thing you've ever heard?

now do yourself a favor and purchase a willie belt buckle, a rebel road sista koozie, or a mama tried t-shirt. miranda & i did!

p.s. i'm going to do my darnest to get to warrenton for the junk-o-rama prom on april 1! hope to see you there! :)

the perils of a single girl: part II

three posts in one night? i'm on a roll! i figured i would dispose more of my "wisdom" on the male species (which is basically none) as i sit out on my porch and enjoy this starry, starry night.

tonight's post consists of tackling prototype dimwit. dimwit [noun] - slang stupid or slow-thinking person.

no, do not be confused...mr. dimwit is not the same as mr. toolbox (mentioned in part I.) they very well may be of the same family tree, but both are distantly related (think second cousin.) generally speaking, TB's tend to be quite intellectual and sharp, 99% of them having received a legit private school education; they just use their mind for evil or the relentless pursuit of being a patrick bateman wannabe. poor dimwits never stood a chance. in the defense of the dimwit, i will ALWAYS prefer the man who is guilty of ignorance over the man who's detriment is pride.

STRONG NOTE OF WARNING: if you find yourself in the arms of a dimwit/toolbox combo (think brody jenner) RUN LIKE THE WIND!!! remember ladies, TB + DW = no hope.

going on a date with a dimwit can be quite fun, but it lacks any kind of mental stimulation. quite often, DWs are incredibly handsome. if you've ever been guilty of taking the good looking guy to prom/dance/sorority function because somehow you thought the pictures would turn out better, yet the night was incredibly ho-hum...you were in the presence of a DW. a DW attracts with his aw chucks charm and his tantalizing smile, but leaves you with an "are you serious?" look in your eye when he determinedly asks you what all the fuss is about haiti and why you think there's a song about jimmy cracked corn if no one cares? (that really happened.) come on, it wouldn't be fair to be that pretty AND have a stratospherically high IQ now would it?

the problem with DW's are that they can only keep you occupied for so long. once you get over the 6'5'' height and big, brown eyes, you're left in a sea of grammatically nightmarish text messages and emails, constantly having to dumb down your lexicon, and worst of all - EXTREME BOREDOM!

since men are such visual creatures, i don't think they let this impediment get to them much (if at all), but i'm a chick who craves verbal banter and current events convos, not to mention a man who has some genuine ambition (that is soooo fine.)

*i should note that the posts in this series are satirical in nature and are not meant to generalize all men. the author loves men! and also realizes that she has a few deplorable character traits too...

porch season has officially kicked off!

HAPPY. HAPPY. HAPPY!

bring on the corona. dos equis. jimmy buffett. bare feet (with toenails painted hot pink of course).

the perils of a single girl: part I

since most of my girlfriends are married, engaged, or in serious relationships they find it hilariously entertaining to live vicariously through my love life...they get such a riot out of it in fact, that they have begged me to write about it. i have thought long and hard about this decision, (remember my aversion to revealing private matters - dang scorpio trait) and i have come to a similar conclusion that it would be quite inquisitive and interesting to document my (mis)adventures in love. so here it goes - the inaugural post in the series...hope you enjoy! *and boys, don't worry! i won't use your real names!

i guess i should start by admittedly telling you that it's been awhile since i've been on the dating scene. when my heart gets obliteratingly smashed, my natural reaction is to go into hibernation and forget about romance, love, and the like. i find myself feeling like that old '97s song lyric, "i believe in love, but it don't believe in me." however, i have been poked and prodded by everyone i know to "get back into the game." as dad so eloquently put it, "shan, if you're not gettin' bucked off, you're not ridin' the horse!"

so over the past few weeks, i have decided that i know they're right. i can't drown in a self-imposed state of isolation just because i'm afraid...i have reluctantly pushed myself to go on a myriad of dates over the last few weeks - setups, blind dates, friend-with-potential-chemistry, co-worker, rodeo connections, etc. and gosh y'all, this takes a lot of work...

i could write endlessly on this topic, but for this post i'd like to focus on one phenomenon that keeps reoccurring. i call it the toolbox effect. i'll meet a seemingly normal, attractive, driven man and then i have to sit pretty and listen to him drone on and on about his fitness regimen and his new ______ (fill in the blank with boat, motorcycle, toy). frankly, I DON'T CARE.

i think most women would think i've lost my mind, i mean these guys are top notch. one in particular looks like the love child of bradley cooper and brett favre and i will surely spend the rest of my life trying to find the cologne he wears. another comes from a well-known south texas ranching family and he picked me up in a mercedes (truth: my heart sank when i realized he didn't drive a pickup truck.) i guess the point i'm trying to drive home is that don't impress me much. i don't care about all of your real estate, your golf courses, your pedigree, your ralph lauren wardrobe, your dashing good looks, or who you know. i'm so over it...GIVE ME SOME SUBSTANCE! thank you shania.

if anyone knows a man who can hold down an intelligent conversation, has a good heart, will treat me like a woman should be treated, and will bait my fishing hook...please send him on down my way.

my candle obsession

does anyone else out there burn candles, well...almost religiously? i must say, that is my one absolute essential. not only can it make your place smell extraordinary, but it really transforms a house into a home.

a brand that i have stood by for years is tyler candles, which is still one of my favorites, but i have found two new brands that will knock your socks off!

the first, fredericksburg candle company, is manufactured by a company that i just love, fredericksburg farms. these candles burn so well that your entire house will smell of aromatic bliss for HOURS! the wax in these things has some high potency, which is what i prefer. many scents to choose from, but my favorites are west texas saddle leather (it's phenomenal), hill country conifer (so clean and therapeutic), and texas cowboy coffee (you'll feel like you're at a campfire.)

i have also been introduced to comfort candles courtesy of ranch at the rim and they are to die for! they're a bit of a luxury candle, but they are so worth it!! they are made right down the road in comfort, texas (as i should mention that all three brands are texas products.) once again, i won't buy a candle that won't burn strong, and these definitely last. my favorite scents in this line are red currant and spring rain...they are both fantastic lit next to a hot bubble bath with this song playing in the background!

candles comprise that small piece of life known as simple pleasures. i insist that you have something in your life that costs little or nothing, but just makes you feel good!
