when love finds you
as i sit here in my living room surrounded by wedding gifts, raffia and ribbon scattered at my feet, party favors to assemble, an endless to do list in my mind, i can't help but notice that the clock is ticking and there are only nine days until i walk down that aisle and say "i do." though i haven't been a "bridezilla," like any girl planning a wedding knows, it's easy to get so wrapped up in the wedding festivities that you forget why you're actually even getting married in the first place. i think there are several reasons that happens. for one thing, there's a lot riding on your wedding day, especially if you're a girl. especially if you're a girl who was raised in conservative, small-town west texas and then you went to baylor! it doesn't get any more southern and expectational than that! now, I'm not the kind of girl who finds total fulfillment in being married, but i'd be lying to you if i said i hadn't thought about this day from a young age. therefore, you add in the expectations of yourself and your life-long anticipation of this event, all the money and time that you and your parents have invested into the event for months on end, and if you're like me, you want everyone to walk away thinking, "wow, i just had the most incredible night!"
earlier today, i was sorting through some boxes and came across a journal that i had been writing in a lot last year. my whole life is collected in the pages of journals, but unfortunately that habit came to a halt with my teaching career. i started reading through the entries when i came across the one from june 12. i was amazed to see how influential God has been in the love story between theron and me. the gift of unconditional love is something i'm eternally grateful for and never in a million years thought i would actually receive. thus, it's not about the wedding...it's about celebrating the love and commitment between two people...as it should be.

I'm really, really frustrated right now with EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Nothing I seem to do is right. Nothing makes sense. When I finally seem to be on the right path, things fall apart. I'm trying to live so righteously and I'm trying to be aligned with God's will for my life, but sometimes this just feels so hopeless.
When will things be calm again? When can I stop worrying and feel at peace? I know I'm doubting God right now and I know that's not right, but sometimes (like right now) I feel so hopeless and alone. Not hopeless and alone as in suicidally depressed, but hopeless and alone as in I'm tired of always fighting for something, always having to take care of myself. One day, I just want someone to take care of me.
On that note, I feel that I have given online dating (a whole month of it!) a valiant effort and it's just not for me. Perhaps it's not good timing and perhaps I need to work on myself some more. I need to process a lot of things and I need to be able to give the right person a clean slate. However, even this frustrates me. Here I am taking classes and Bible studies, I've seen a counselor, I'm addressing my issues, I've been praying all the time, and I'm trying to love God with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength - but is there a man out there doing the same thing?
I have these high ideals about true love, honorable character, integrity, letting one woman satisfy you for the rest of your life...do these things even exist? Are they just a figment of my imagination? Horribly frustrating.
3:25 p.m.
As you can probably tell from the previous entry, I was pretty unglued. It got even worse when I was trying to do my certification program and the whole thing kept messing up.
I called my Mom and became hysterical, and remarkably, she made me feel so much better about things. I'm in such a rough place in my life financially, professionally, personally, but Mom always has this way of putting things into perspective for me. She gave me the whole "character building experience" pep talk and reminded me that I could be at home putting MaMaw into the nursing home and getting yelled at for not having a heart. She ended the conversation with something I've been hoping to hear for a long time, "Your time is coming Shannan." After I got off the phone, I went for a walk (per her suggestion) and wouldn't you know that it was a beautiful day outside and the very first song that came up on my iPod was Carrie Underwood's "So Small." What appropriate lyrics.
What you got if you ain't got love
The kind that you just want to give away
It's okay to open up
Go ahead and let the light shine through
I know it's hard on a rainy day
You want to shut the world out
And just be left alone
But don't run out on your faith
Cause sometimes that mountain you've been climbin'
is just a grain of sand
And what you've been out there searchin' for forever
is in your hands
And when you figure out
Love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else
Seem so small
It's so easy to get lost inside
A problem that seems so big at the time
It's like a river that's so wide
It swallows you whole
While you're sittin' 'round thinkin' 'bout what you can't change
And worryin' about all the wrong things
Time's flying by, moving so fast
You better make it count cause you can't get it back
My mama's right. Everything's going to be alright and my time is coming.

hello again, my name is shannan...
and i'm desperately longing for carefree days of blogging and life analysis again! don't get me wrong, i'm happy to be in full-throttle wedding mode with the hottest, smartest, kindest, most wonderful man i've ever laid eyes on, but i have exactly 3 weeks to pull this shindig together and right now this is what my life looks like:

since the helm of the new year and into the waning months of 2011, i will have gone to 9 weddings! wowza...and many of them happen to be my best friends'. don't know what was in the water this year, but it must have had something to do with nuptial madness. on that note, a warm congratulations goes out to my dear friends britney & christopher on their recent engagement! so darn happy for those two!

as for the sowder-pfeifer wedding, the invitations are sent, the vendors are ready to go, the decor is locked down, and my band(s) - yes, bands plural have all been confirmed. now if i can only get theron pfeifer (the groom) - who's company unexpectedly shipped him down to trinidad for the time being - back in time for the ceremony, i can breathe a huge sigh of relief! please keep your fingers and toes crossed!
*i wish i could share more detail and give you a sneak peek at the bridal portraits, but i'm trying really hard for the element of surprise so after the big day, i shall divulge all the goods!

engagement photo shoot
it only took a million years, but our engagement pictures our finally hot off the press! i am so pleased with how they turned out and i couldn't be happier with our photographer - julio costilla of helo photography. i knew of a lot of photographers, but i had no idea how to choose one until i was referred to julio by rebecca trois (a goddess who i adore and also the owner of our wedding venue). julio is the official photog of trois estate and he's worked with some of the best in the business. he's the consummate professional and very wise beyond his years, plus he made it so easy! i don't know about y'all, but every time i looked at engagement portraits of other couples, i would think to myself, "i wonder if it's really awkward to take photos like that? do they give you directions for that stuff?" our photographer was all about letting us do our own thing and blending himself into the background so we wouldn't even know he existed. it sounds strange, but i really didn't even know he was there...which i guess you can tell as many people have asked, "so did y'all just decide to make out the whole time?" i'm sorry! i know there are a lot of kissing pictures! oops ;)
anyway, i wanted the photos to be very representative of us, our lifestyle, and our personalities. i decided to do the shoot at floore's country store since i knew there would be some good backdrops and that's the place where theron and i met, plus we love it out there! i'm the kind of person that can see something in my head and i know what i want, so i told julio that i wanted pictures that told a story (rather than portraits of us just sitting there with my arms draped around theron's neck) and i wanted a pictorial look to the photos, something like a photo spread you might see in cowboys & indians or texas monthly. he really hit it out of the park and his use of color is just phenomenal! here's a few, but you can check out the rest on facebook:

love all the signage! i was going for an old gringo/double d ranch ad and i think we got it!

color turned out great on this one...

haha reminds me of an epic romance...

shannan d'aun sowder, would you marry me?!

i'm a huge dancer and have been all of my life. thank the lord, i found a guy who loves to dance too! this is our little homage to that...

i like this cute little spy shot!

fan of this one...well, because red is my fave color and my man looks hot!!! is he not a dead-ringer for the dude from country strong?

under the neons...

this shot was very spontaneous...we wanted to take a break so we just saw some chairs sitting there and had a seat, but i love the way this turned out!

i thought the antique finish on this one turned out cool, plus i love the general vibe of the photo. too bad my husband doesn't plan to run for governor of texas...i think this one would make an awesome campaign photo!
i hope to be back with more wedding updates soon, but this will have to do for now! i will get to blogging more frequently again i promise!

wedding update
i'm sorry. SO SORRY. i know i've dropped off the face of the earth. and i know no one reads this dusty old blog anymore. i've had so much to update, but NO time. between planning the social event of my life and going through teacher hell, this little thing has just been abandoned. in wedding news...
the std's (or ahem save the dates) have been shipped and should be arriving any day now! i'm happy with how they turned out, considering we haven't had real engagement pictures yet...long story...photog doesn't want to shoot until the spring. anyyyyyway, i'd say for being taken on an iphone, they ain't bad ;)

also, our humble little website is up and running now, which you can check out at www.theronandshannan.com
it's a work in progress, but it's been a fun little project for me. i love that our guests will be able to access all the information they need through this little site. how convenient weddings are these days.
also, the mister booked one sweet honeymoon and we will be adventuring off to the coasts of ST. LUCIA!

ayayayay.....i can hardly wait! definitely have to start workin' on a tan...
hope all is well for you these days and i can't wait to get reacquainted!

wedding update
guess what? guess what? i found THE dress. it is enchanting, magical, fairy-tale-like and i feel fabulous in it. want to know the funny part, it was the very first dress i tried on at the very first place we looked! i'll admit it, i've really been getting into the bride reality shows (never interested me before, but i guess i can identify now - except for that awful "bridal plasty" one on E!) anyway, i always thought the dress selection would be this never-ending process, much like searching for a needle in a haystack...and what do you know, mine was the first one!
i made myself try on 10 other dresses for good measure, but none had the "wow factor" of the first dress or the crowd reaction. crowd reaction you say? yes, if you have yet to go through this process, they make you parade around on a stage in front of all the other brides, customers, and retail assistants (which on this particular day at lasting bridal couture in dallas, there seemed to be about 30 other people in the store!) i was horrified by this, but after a few walks on the runway, i guess you just get used to it. anyway, when i came out in that first dress, there was an audible gasp from the audience and they all chanted in unison "YOU MUST SAY YES TO THE DRESS!"
not only did we say yes to that dress, but we also found the flower girl's and bridesmaid's dresses too. what can i say, i'm notoriously decisive and i know what i want.
i would post pics of everything on here, but i know theron sometimes sneaks a peak on this sight and i desperately want that "i can't believe how beautiful you look" moment when those double doors burst wide open. suffice it to say, my mission was to find something along the lines of the jenna bush "oscar de la renta" crawford, texas ensemble and i found something that is even more desirable! can't wait to see what you all think...
in other news, after being sized (which requires the ring to go all the way to the nyc tiffany's and back) my ring is finally back on my finger again. it was especially sparkly today so i had to take a picture:

that's all the news in brideland, will keep you posted on further details!

venue is booked!
yes sir, we have found THE PLACE to host our summer nuptials. i am happy to announce that we will be getting married at the trois estate in fredericksburg, texas. i am over-the-moon happy about this place and it is truly like a dream. though i didn't have a wedding planned from the time i was a little girl, i did always know that i wanted to get married in the hill country and i wanted it to have a spanish influence. wouldn't you know that this enchanting village was modeled after my favorite mexican city - san miguel de allende?!? es perfecto :)

the proposal
S&T get engaged: part II
once again, this little blog has served as somewhat of a consistent documentation piece for me for the last four years, so I figured it only natural to include one of the most momentous pieces of my life. it's so interesting, puzzling, (albeit embarrassing) to witness the metamorphoses that has taken place on these pages. if you had told me just one year ago that i would be writing about my own impending marriage, i would've fallen right out of my chair! dr. seuss was right, "oh the places you'll go"
okay. cue to cut out the self contemplation. i'll get to the good stuff!
the first thing everyone has asked me, is "did you have any idea that he was going to propose?" the answer is NOOOO WAY! i was absolutely, truly SHOCKED. there have been very few times in my life where i have been utterly surprised (my analytical side usually does the foreshadowing) but in this case, theron pfeifer pulled it off.
we were on our way to dallas for the cotton bowl game (baylor vs. tech) and theron suggested that on our way to dallas we have dinner at the stagecoach inn in salado. (now i can recollect wanting to change into a t-shirt and shorts thinking we were just on a road trip, but theron saying, "well you might want to keep your dress on!") should've tipped me off, but i just thought he wanted to have a really nice dinner (he's into spontaneous romanticism - much more than even me if you can believe it.)
we drove to salado and had a table waiting for us with our sweet-as-could-be waitress melody. if you haven't been to this restaurant, you must! the food is excellent and the staff recites the menu from memory...not to mention the place has been running since 1860 and it is the definition of southern, homespun charm.
after a nice dinner, we came out on the two story, sweeping porch (SO TARA-LIKE) and theron declared, "let's go sit on that porch and watch the sun go down."
"well i really want to get on the road, it's getting really late and we still have to get to dallas tonight."
"come on, babe, i really want to go sit on those rocking chairs."
"THEROOOON, i'm cold and i don't really want to just sit on the porch and soak it all in. LET'S GO!"
this went on for a few minutes (little did i know the man was trying to ask me to marry him) and finally he just lays it all out on the line.
"shannan. i have to ask you something. (GETS DOWN ON ONE KNEE) i've loved you from the moment i saw you and i want to ask you to be my wife and make me the happiest man in the world. i want to take care of you and i want to build a life with you...and a whole lot of other stuff that i'll keep to myself ;) you get the point.
i screamed yes without a moment's hesitation and then i ripped open that infamous tiffany's box (that i secretly prayed for years i'd always see when this occasion presented itself, but never really allowed myself to believe.) we then walked through the streets of salado as if we were walking on clouds and called all of our friends and family. of course everyone knew except for me and he had been scheming with my father for weeks. he told me later that night that my dad had called him earlier that day to ask if he was going to "pull the trigger." HOW LOVELY.
we then went on to dallas where we celebrated the engagement all weekend long and had a blast stuffing our faces at the state fair, galavanting around downtown ft. worth, and spending time with our loved ones. it will always be a weekend that i will treasure and remember forever. now the wedding planning shall commence! can't wait 'till i get to be mrs. pfeifer!!!!!!!!!!!

riding the largest amusement ride in the western hemisphere....that great big 'ol ferris wheel at the state fair! (and very happy to be newly engaged.)

celebratory dinner at the reata with these tamales that i would die for.

on our way back to SA, we stopped in salado to recreate the engagement. ha yes, we're that cool. here's the handsome man at the scene of the crime.

i'll love this porch always...

yep, we're gettin' married!

he liked it, so he put a ring on it!
S & T get engaged: part I
that's right folks. shannan d'aun sowder is getting hitched! and if i wasn't looking down right now at my sparkling ring finger as i type, i wouldn't believe it myself! we know, we know, WE KNOW you all think we're certifiably insane and we realize we have had a whirlwind courtship...but i guess the cliches are true, WHEN YOU KNOW...YOU KNOW.
i just want to take this opportunity to thank all of you well-wishers for your warm congratulations and best wishes. it has meant so much to both of us to receive the outpouring of support from friends and family. we are so lucky to have so many people behind us and neither of us take it for granted at all! to keep all of you posted on wedding details, i will use this blog to chronicle my adventures in brideland. (which for the record, i'm having a tough time navigating seeing as though i seem to be the only girl who didn't have all the details ironed out at age 6.) but know this, it's going to be a VERY exciting, VERY texified evening in the hill country complete with TONS of eating and dancing!
a lot of people have asked me how we met, so i guess i should start with the beginning...
once upon a time, a handsome prince met a lovely young maiden in a far away place known as HELOTES, TEXAS. on that steamy, hot-as-the-hinges- of-hell night, they were both serendipitously at FLOORE'S COUNTRY STORE to see their beloved robert earl keen. the young prince was only there to "experience the music" and cared nothing for the fair ladies vying for his attention, while the princess had grown incredibly disenchanted with love herself and was there as a true aficionada of the music as well.
the princess had grown very weary of being set up on horrible bad dates with co-worker jamie's cousin, mom's long-lost room mate's son, and someone from the rodeo committee. she detested the idea of meeting anyone on the bloody internet or premeditating the "right place at the right time" scenario. so, being a scribe, she took to her blog and banished dating FOREVER! (or at least until the hero on the white horse came riding up on his trusty steed...)
the princess didn't know when or where she would find her knight in shining armor, but she prayed that it would be downright obvious and she would be undoubtedly, undeniably, knock-me-over-with-a-feather convinced that he was the one from the moment she saw him.
ahem, back to the night at floore's, the young princess was coming down a flight of steps when she saw a mysterious, bearded cowboy confidently strolling around waiting for the concert to start. the moment she saw him, she was entranced and deeply magnetized toward this man. voices kept playing in her head telling her she must find out who this mystical creature was, but lord have mercy...shannan sowder would NEVER hit on a man! why, heavens, it's in the rule book...let a man pursue you, never make the first move if you are truly a genteel lady! the inner battle went on the rest of the night, when finally the voice would not go away: "IF YOU DON'T TALK TO THIS MAN, YOU WILL REGRET IT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!!!!!" Okay, okay she finally relented.
before she knew it, the irresistibly charming stranger was by her side and she casually turned around and asked him something really cutting edge and witty..."so, you a big fan of robert earl keen?" he gladly joined in on the banter, but quickly added, "umm...is your boyfriend going to mind that i'm talking to you?" forgot to mention, but the young lady had dragged her 6'4'' grid-iron, football player brother along to the concert. once that relationship status was cleared up, well, the rest is history as they say.
the two young whipper snappers went on a date the very next day (swing dancing to be exact!) and spent the whole summer in a haze of euphoric bliss traveling all over the great state of texas and fallin' in love. for some reason, the young prince decided he absolutely had to marry this stubborn, crazy, peculiar girl and after just 116 days they decided to get engaged!
believe me when i say the princess had to kiss a lot of frogs to find this prince, but it was well worth the wait.
