looks like kim kardashian & kris humphries are headed for the big d, and i don't mean dallas. if my trusty hometown newspaper confirms it, it must be true...
what a joke, no respect for the sanctity of marriage. couldn't they have given it more than 2 months? i guess when you have glittery ponies, three wedding dresses, and helicopters at your wedding things are D.O.A. like many americans, i watched the two-part e! wedding special and i saw bad omens that this relationship would tank (how uncomfortable was the rehearsal dinner where the betrothed didn't even sit together?) i am appalled that this wedding earned the kardashians an estimated $18 million profit, yet i still watched...don't really know if i want to follow this family anymore?

why would ANYONE cheat on these women?!?!

in light of the breaking news that jesse james is now in the doghouse for carrying on an extramarital affair with a tatted up hooker, i have decided to investigate this mysterious phenomenon of ordinary men cheating on extraordinary, unbelievable women. i have chosen sandra, halle, and shania as examples of high profile scandals, but i know there are many others.
i just don't get it. how can you cheat on a woman who is obviously smart, undeniably classy, filthy rich, insanely talented, and off-the-charts gorgeous? i mean, really, how is it ever going to get better than halle berry?!?! that poor man who went behind her back because of an alleged "sex addiction" is in for a lifetime of continual disappointment.
a question i ponder: is it really worth it to a man to leave behind a home - an entity that has been both painstakingly and joyously built by one memory after the next - to get his kicks from a two bit cocktail waitress or an aspiring "model/actress/reality tv contestant?" i'm still baffled.
one thing is for sure, being an incredible woman who seems to have it all together does not make you immune from infidelity. i've said it once and i'll say it a thousand more times: billy currington was right...God is great. beer is good. and people are CRAZY!!!!!!!!
p.s. i'm genuinely bummed about the demise of sandra & jesse. i thought they were the real deal. i found myself telling someone just last week that i wanted a love like theirs. hmmm...guess not.

what? you've got to be kidding me!

after i got home from work, i slipped into the t-shirt shown above, which happens to be an item from my FAVORITE store ever! i had to run a few errands in town (yes, i still say "i'm going into town" - can't break that habit) and i definitely wanted to get out of my stuffy suit. anyway, i struck up a conversation with three different individuals at the post office, carino's, and the republic golf club and the general dialogue was surprisingly the same:
PERSON X: can i help you?
ME: yeah, i'm here to pick up some items for the golf tournament.
PERSON X: oh yeah, let me get that for you. hey, never seen a shirt like that. that's pretty funny.
ME: (insert fake chuckle) yeah, i guess so. i promise it's clean, i just really like the song.
PERSON X: the song?
ME: yeah, "sunday morning coming down." kris kristofferson.
PERSON X: who's that?
WOW. one time, excusable. three? that's pushing it.

things i don't understand.
generally speaking, i try not to complain or have a list of pet peeves that irk me; for life is much too short to be ticked off and irritable. however, one cannot be 100% content and agreeable ALLLLL the time...the people who try this, well, you are only fooling yourself.
so this morning, there have been two things that i have momentarily observed which rub me the wrong way:
CASE STUDY #1: IT TURNS OUT THAT POOR GRAMMATICAL PUNCTUATION AND SPELLING ERRORS ARE EMINENTLY ABRASIVE TO ME. i have regrettably come to realize that we are a texting/blackberrying/twittering generation, but for the love - please don't send me an email that reads, "can we get together on wensday for some cofee? i know your busy, but let me know!" indeed, i could think you are a stone cold fox and the best invention since sliced bread, but if i get a text message stating, "sorrie, u r so cuite. you sure do love danccen! ;)" it is a DEAL BREAKER. i don't want to be the authoritative grammar gestapo or anything like that, but these real examples came from educated people in their late twenties!! something is very wrong with this.
CASE STUDY #2: I AM GREATLY PERTURBED WHEN COUPLES SHARE ONE JOINT FACEBOOK ACCOUNT. sure i am not betrothed to anyone so i know i have a whole lot to learn about holy matrimony, but this just doesn't make sense to me. are you not enough of an individual to have your own profile? come up with your own interests? post your own photos? list your own birthday? i just don't understand the need for status updates which read: jack & jill are going to home depot to pick out paint colors!!!!!!! jack & jill are a little under the weather, must get well for the bbq tonight!!!!!! the excessive use of exclamation! points! is a hurdle in and of itself, then you have to give me a play-by-play of your mundane coupledom? if someone who is married (happily, i might add) can explain this to me, i'd love to know your thoughts. DISCLAIMER: love reading family blogs, married blogs, etc. just prefer that people maintain some semblance of autonomy. and yes, i think marriage is a wonderful thing.
ok. that is all. thank you for letting me vent. now go out and have yourself a fabulous labor day weekend!

oh san antonio...
since i have been a resident of "the alamo city" for the last four months, i have witnessed many strange, quixotic, fascinating things about this city and its people; therefore, i have decided to create a list of my 10 most frequent observations:
1. TRAFFIC IS ABSOLUTELY DEPLORABLE. maybe it's because i've never in my life dealt with road congestion, but dangit, this is such a waste of time and a drain on my quality of life. i've been keeping up with the local politicos around town and they keep promising they will address this issue, but i'll believe it when i see it. and seriously, what moron forgot to add connectors to US 281 and Loop 1604?!?! that was just plain stupid.
2. THE SIDE OF TOWN YOU RESIDE IN DETERMINES EVERYTHING. yeah, yeah i'm sure this is common with every city - the whole "i must have this zip code to determine my existence and status" thing, but s.a. takes it to a whole new level. they completely forgo the neighborhood debate (unless you live the priveleged life of an alamo heights dweller) and have a freakin' battle royale over the northside/southside/eastside/westside. in some cases, the battle between the north and the south rivals the cival war. ok, just kidding...but there is real tension that exists there. i think i have the best of both worlds - live in the northside, work in the southside.
3. SPURS=ROYALTY. dear lord, i never saw so many people so upset a few days ago when the spurs were knocked out of the playoffs by the mavs. it was like a south texas-sanctioned day of mourning. just so you know, following the spurs here is a way of life. in fact, we don't have to dress up for work if we wear a spurs jersey on game day! crazy right? and don't even get me started on the supreme deity of the players themselves. they're immortal. all of them. their endorsements are all over this city!

4. BECAUSE THERE'S NOT A "REAL" FOOTBALL TEAM, ROADRUNNER FOOTBALL IS ALL THE RAGE. maybe it's because of the spurs' unmatched domination, but football doesn't have a presence in the city. however, apparently, that's all about to change when utsa gets a division I football team next year. it's all anybody's talking about right now, especially since larry coker is on board.

5. LOCAL COMMERCIALS ARE PRETTY TOUGH TO SIT THROUGH. once again, i think this is a commonality everywhere, but i've seen some pretty bad ones here. i don't know what kind of advertising budget fiesta dodge has, but their ad runs all the time! i think their pitchwoman is cute and even resembles a mexican version of catherine zeta jones, but this commerical is annoying!!! but nothing, i mean nothing, tops the eyerolling irritant that is the personal injury law firm commercials. maloney & maloney takes the cake on this one.
6. LOCALS DON'T INHABIT THE RIVERWALK. hard to believe, i realize, but this is a common misconception among outsiders. since i've moved here, people back home are always asking me, "well darlin', what's it like living by the riverwalk????" yes, auntie em & sheriff sonny, the riverwalk has its time and place and its own invariable charms...but those charms quickly fade when you have to pay $10 for a mediocre parking spot and get trapped among the tourists. instead, we frequent such places like this or this.
7. THERE ARE A LOT OF BABIES BEING BORN IN THIS TOWN. perhaps it's because of my job, but i have been astounded with the teen pregnancy rate here. texas can pat itself on the back for relinquishing the top spot to mississippi this year, but that doesn't mean bexar county can get off the hook. our county still ranks #1 in the state and when i visit middle schools and notice that they are equipped with day care centers utilized by students for their babies, it makes me scratch my head a little bit. but i'll stop here, for this issue deserves an entirely different post.
8. IF YOU DON'T LIKE MEXICAN FOOD, YOU'RE S.O.L. but if you do, this town is euphoric bliss. so far, i have yet to go 2 days without eating it (which also explains why this town has a severe obesity problem.) there are so many places to choose from that you could live here your whole life and never get to all of them. if you're on a budget, i prefer taqueria datapoint or taco taco, but if you're looking to keep it classy, you must check out paloma blanca (my favorite restaurant in town.) and what's a trip to s.a. without mi tierra's?

9. GEORGE STRAIT IS THE HOMETOWN HERO. oh how fitting that i should choose the place where mr. strait is a legend to settle down. though he hails from pearsall just a stone's throw away; the city of san antonio claims george as one of their own, and rightfully so, since he now takes up in the dominion. since i have been here, i have had many "strait sightings" as i like to call them - one at oak hills church, one at the george & buddy strait team roping classic, and one at the aforementioned mi tierra's. and yes, everytime my heart flutters. words cannot do justice to how grateful i feel to live in a town where radio stations have features like "strait at eight" and "jorge play of the day." ayayay that man is muy caliente.

10. AND LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, THERE ARE NO SHORTAGE OF SONGS ABOUT 'OL SAN ANTONE. i don't know if i was just unaware or completely oblivious, but this town must be quite the musical inspiration. every time i turn around, i hear a song about s.a. and i think i know why...there's something about this place that's so historical and so haunting that there's always a story to tell. some of my favorite tunes are: "songs about texas", "that's what i like about texas", "san antonio rose", "san antonio stroll", "san antonio girl", "anybody goin' to san antone", and "folsom prison blues."

misguided offspring...

over the course of spending the last 2 weeks in washington d.c. i have had the lovely pleasure of making the acquaintance of several of the children of our country's political vips, and i have to say - about 95% of them are complete screw-ups! i'm normally not one to go throwing other people under the bus, but then again, if you would have witnessed the antics of howard dean's son last saturday night or those of al gore jr. the weekend before, you would question their sanity and morality too.
this got me to thinking...
why do accomplished, honorable, highly intelligent people breed imbeciles? no i'm not strictly referring to the two cases mentioned above (their contribution to society could be argued...), but i am referring to parents who have horrible, ungrateful children when the parents in question seem to be successful people.
what really bothers me is that all these kids haven't done a damn thing, they simply ride the coattails of their parent's hard work and accomplishments. they have loads of money, but they have no real respect for what it took to get their family in such a fortunate situation. however, to play devil's advocate (because i love doing so), i think there is a direct correlation between having a time consuming, demanding job and children suffering for lack of attention. in a lot of these scenarios, father dearest was probably never home, thus resulting in a subpar relationship with his family.
okay i'll stop analyzing, but these kids need to shape up. or else - i'm going to release my horribly incriminating pictures to the media for an undisclosed sum...

subdivisions = death

earlier this morning i had to go to town to run a few errands and i decided to take an alternate route. driving through the country on farm-to-market roads has always been a favorite pastime of mine, so i thought i'd check out FM 179 this morning. back in the day i used to take this road all the time, but since i've been in college, i'd say it's been at least two years since i last drove on it.
well i know that things can't stay the same forever, but come on, did they have to rip up all that open land to develop these shoddy, generic real estate developments with names like "moonridge estates." sick. what's even more appalling are these developments which claim to offer prime "ranch land." sorry people, having 4 acres, a fence and a little place for your pony to trot does NOT qualify you as owning a ranch.
i suppose i'll just have to get used to all of this. it seems the days of cotton fields and wide open spaces are disappearing...
i give you my full permission to smack me upside the head if you ever find yours truly living in one of these cookie-cutter, "planned communities" on the outskirts of a metropolitan area.
